Mexico and the Netherlands have joined forces to promote innovation in the horticultural sector by holding a virtual trade mission aimed at enhancing technological cooperation and expanding trade between both nations, given their productive potential and advances in innovation in protected agriculture.
According to the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Víctor Villalobos Arambula, the goal of the meeting is for Dutch companies and institutions to better understand the Mexican fruit and vegetable sector's trends and for Mexican companies to obtain information on the technology, services, and products that the Netherlands offers.
“This mission will strengthen the commercial relationship between both countries. It will enable strategic investment alliances in the agricultural sector, and help us face the global market taking advantage of the digital revolution in agriculture, genomics, technology, in which the Netherlands is a world leader. ”
In the virtual meeting, he highlighted the potential to continue diversifying the types of vegetables, legumes, and fruits, under innovative production systems in a circular economy meeting the world's highest quality and food safety standards of certification and improving the competitiveness of the horticultural sector.
Villalobos Arambula also proposed the Government of the Netherlands and its horticultural sector work with Mexico on a 2030 Horticultural Plan, which would allow the commercial relationship between both countries to grow and become a reference in the global circular economy.
"Mexico's agricultural food exports to the European Union only account for 4% of the county's total exports. The Netherlands absorbs a quarter of what is sent to Europe and it's the country with the most foreign direct investment in Mexico," he added.
In 2019, the Mexican horticultural sector accounted for more than 14 billion dollars in income. The country had 2.3 million hectares devoted to agriculture and produced nearly 40 million tons of agricultural products. Protected agriculture exists in the 32 states of the country and there are more than 54,000 hectares nationwide devoted to this kind of production.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Nature, and Food Quality of the Netherlands, Carola Schouten; the ambassador of the Netherlands in Mexico, Wilfred Mohr, and the representative of Mexico in the Netherlands, Jose Antonio Zabalgoitia, among others.
